Greetings from Molo Milimani!

Greetings from the Molo Milimani Center! We would like to share some of the highlights of the first term of the year. Thank you for the support and partnership that enables us to make a difference in the lives of the community here in Molo Milimani.

Flood Update:

Since this Community Update was written before the extreme rain and flooding took place in Kenya, we want to provide a quick update.

Despite the heavy rains, we are thankful to report that neither our center or the students we serve were directly affected. We did not experience the flooding that other areas were subject to.

If you'd like to donate to MOHI's flood relief efforts, you can donate here.

Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Meet Oliva*, a remarkable Grade 8 student at Missions of Hope Milimani Center. He joined us in 2018 as a Grade 3 student. Oliva, now 15, is the fourth of 10 siblings and currently resides with her grandmother.

Oliva's journey has been marked by adversity. Initially living with her mother, stepfather, and siblings, the family faced financial hardship exacerbated by her stepfather's alcoholism. Oliva's parents struggled to provide for their children, often resorting to selling household items for sustenance. As the situation deteriorated, Oliva's elder brothers resorted to begging on the streets, leading to their eventual dropout from school.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, our social worker facilitated the transfer of Oliva's brothers to Missions of Hope Ndovoini Center, offering them stability away from the streets. Meanwhile, Oliva and her younger siblings continued to grapple with the challenges at home, often missing school to scavenge for food.

Despite the obstacles, Oliva's determination remained steadfast. In 2021, our team intervened, persuading Oliva's grandmother to take her in. With a stable home environment, Oliva's attendance and academic performance improved significantly.

In 2022, when her mother relocated with the younger siblings, Oliva made the courageous decision to remain behind, prioritizing her education. Today, she is excelling in school and is set to sit for her Grade 9 tests next year, aspiring to become a doctor and uplift her family from poverty.

Oliva's story is a testament to the transformative power of education and resilience in the face of adversity. We are grateful for the positive change witnessed in Oliva's life and continue to support her journey towards a brighter future.
