Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Edwin* is one of our students in Mabatini High School. He joined Missions of Hope International in 2013 and quickly stood out as one of the brightest students in his class.

Edwin lives with his mother and two brothers in Mathare, an informal urban settlement in Nairobi, just a walking distance from the school. For over a decade, the family has been living in a small single-room house made of iron sheets, the only house they could afford in the area because of its low cost.

Edwin’s life has been full of challenges. He was enrolled at our Mabatini Center and studied to Grade 8 before joining Missions of Hope Ndovoini Boys for high school. While in eleventh grade, he fell into bad company. He dropped out of school, and with his free time, he got into even worse companies.

Earlier this year, Edwin's mother approached the school, asking for a second chance for her son. He was readmitted in Grade 11 at Mabatini High School. Since returning, Alex has completely reformed. He is hardworking in class, disciplined and determined to succeed. This year, he attended Angaza Tu Discovery Camp, where he experienced a great transformation. He gave his life to Christ. He has since been baptized and continues to grow in his faith.

Through MOHI, the family has been transformed. Edwin’s mother now runs a small business selling scarves and shawls and is doing well. From living in a single-room iron-sheet shack to living in a concrete house with access to electricity, the transformation is plain to see.

The family is grateful to MOHI for walking alongside them through their times of challenge.

Term Highlights

  • Fifty-two Grade 10 students went to Angaza Tu Discovery Camp (MOHI’s one-week intensive discipleship camp at the Kenyan coast for all tenth graders). It was very impactful as nine boys gave their lives to Christ.
  • Twenty-five students attended discipleship classes and 10 of them got baptized. We desire to make mature disciples who can disciple others.
  • We had a prayer event for all the students who sat for their national tests including Grade 6, 9, and 12 students.

Church Highlights

  • We gathered together as staff, community members for a common service which is a sign of unity and local partnership in the community we serve. The Synergy Service as we call it, was successful, and our staff fully participated in the service.
  • We held separate men’s and women’s ministry services this term, and both groups welcomed community members who joined their gatherings. The women’s ministry also visited a new member and held a warm time of fellowship in her home.

Partner Connections

  • The Africa Fire Mission (Cincinnati, OH) team visited our center and conducted a training on fire prevention, equipping staff and students with essential safety skills.
  • We hosted a team from Traders Point Christian Church (Indianapolis, IN) at our clinic. They treated patients and conducted home visits, offering both medical care and encouragement to families in our community.
  • We welcomed the Wright’s who visited the school and spent quality time with their sponsored students, creating lasting memories and strengthening connections.
