Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Christine* is a 4-year-old preschool student at our Korogocho Nyayo Center. She lives with her single mother in Mathare, an informal urban settlement in Nairobi. When she was first enrolled, her mother was hesitant to share her daughter's health condition. The teachers soon noticed that she was frequently absent from school. When a follow-up was done, we realized that Christine had an existing condition known as adenotonsillar hypertrophy (an abnormal enlargement of the tonsils and adenoids, causing chronic airway obstruction and sleep apnea.) She struggled to breathe, eat, and always had a blocked nose. These conditions made her withdraw from many class activities.

Her family’s financial status made things worse. Her mother could not afford specialized treatment and instead relied on traditional herbs. A medical check-up was conducted at our clinic, and Christine was referred to a local mission hospital, Kijabe, for surgery. After a successful surgery, she was discharged, and through the guidance of our health department, the mother was able to nurse Christine to recovery.

Today, Christine is healthy, active and thriving in class. She is more confident and actively participates in school activities, unlike before. Her mother was guided to join a local church where she regularly attends with her daughter. She is deeply grateful to MOHI for its intervention in her daughter’s health.
