Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Greg* is a joyful six-year-old, first-grade student at Missions of Hope Grogan Center. He lives in the Korogocho Grogan community with his parents and two sisters. Greg joined the school in 2022 as a kindergartener.
When he first came to MOHI, Greg was often untidy and withdrawn. He would arrive at school wearing a torn sweater, a shirt with missing buttons, shoes with no laces, and a face that hadn’t been washed. His hair was unkempt, and his schoolbag was often empty. Despite being given homework, he rarely brought it back, often saying his books got lost on the way to school. He sometimes pretended to be writing in class but would turn in blank pages. His attendance was irregular, and when he did come, he was often late. He also struggled with health issues, including persistent ringworms and a constant runny nose.
Recognizing his need for support, a MOHI social worker stepped in. Every morning, she made a point of passing by his home to ensure he arrived at school on time, properly dressed, and ready to learn. The team engaged Greg’s mother, helping her understand the importance of caring for her child. They walked with her through the rights of a child and encouraged her to take an active role in her son’s life. She agreed to be more present and committed to helping him succeed.
Greg’s teacher began working closely with him, ensuring he was prepared for every lesson, and even had him sit near the teacher’s desk for extra guidance. His mother began checking his backpack every evening and helping him with homework. She also started taking him to the MOHI clinic at Pangani, where he received treatment for his health issues.
Today, Greg is a completely different child. He can complete classwork and even goes above and beyond by doing extra assignments just because he enjoys writing. His honesty has grown, and he no longer hides his books. He now leads by example and serves as the class president. Every morning, he collects homework books from other students for the teacher, organizes them neatly, and ensures every student is ready to start the day.
His transformation is also physical—his ringworms are gone, his persistent cold has cleared up, and he carries a clean handkerchief every day. He’s proud of his cleanliness, and so are we.
Greg’s journey is a beautiful example of what can happen when a child receives the support, love, and encouragement they need. We are incredibly proud of how far he has come and excited for all that lies ahead for him.
