Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Fred* lost his mother when he was just 6 years old. His mother was tragically murdered, a victim of domestic violence fueled by drug abuse and alcohol. Fred has a sibling who now lives with their grandparents in a rural area but Fred stayed in Korogocho with his stepfather.
After his mother's death, Fred went to live with his aunt. However, he often returned to Korogocho to see his stepfather, a drug trafficker and ex-convict. This man would exploit Fred, using him to sell drugs and other illegal items. Fred would frequently miss school to engage in these activities, sometimes for entire terms. This lifestyle can entice vulnerable people as they can make money to sustain themselves. It gives the illusion that it will lift them out of poverty.
A social worker intervened and worked with Fred's aunt to ensure his safety and well-being. Fred was severely malnourished and needed urgent care. The school provided him with meals and enrolled him in a special feeding program. With consistent support from the social worker, Fred began attending school regularly. He was provided with school supplies and the local government representative offered protection from his abusive stepfather, ensuring that he did not have access to Fred.
Fred's behavior has improved significantly. He is focused on his studies and dreams of becoming an engineer. Fred loves to draw. His social worker noticed this and encouraged this talent and provided him with creative materials. Whenever Fred draws something new he goes to show his social worker. This has kept Fred engaged and he now enjoys being in school.
We are grateful for Fred's transformation and pray that God continues to guide him on his path to success.
