Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Mercy* is one of the parents at our Baba Dogo Center. She has 5 children and lives with her family in a single-room house within the community. Her other two children were rescued from a dumpsite and are now being cared for in a children’s home within the neighborhood.

For years, Mercy has taken on laundry jobs around the neighborhood to provide for her family, yet making ends meet has remained a constant struggle. Anytime she would meet our social workers, Mercy would often express to them her desire to join MOHI as a casual laborer. A stable income meant that supporting her children would be easier.

One day last year, she was called in for a day’s job. She performed her duties so well that she was repeatedly invited back whenever an extra hand was needed. Her commitment and excellent work ethic got her recommended for a long-term position.

Earlier this year, Mercy joined the MOHI team at Baba Dogo Center. This new status transformed her life. With a stable income, Mercy can now provide for her family. This has created a sense of stability and hope for the entire family.

The children have also experienced a significant transformation. They are happy and healthy. They enjoy regular, balanced meals, attend school regularly, and are thriving both at home and in school.

Mercy’s transformation does not stop at that. She plans on taking a short tailoring course to improve her skills and create more opportunities for herself. She has also joined MOHI Capital Ltd (a financial services initiative under MOHI that provides microloans to help families within the communities we serve), where she saves regularly with the intention of starting a business in the future.

Mercy is a born-again Christian and attends a local church with her children. We continue praying for her as she continues to build a brighter future for herself and her family.

Term Highlights

  • We are proud of our students who took part in our Fun Day activities, which was really fun! The students had a good time spending time together as the school term was coming to an end.
  • We are proud of our Grade 6 and 9 students who sat for their national tests. Next year, each will advance to the next grade.
  • We held a school awards event where the best students were recognized and celebrated. This is one of the ways we encourage other students to keep on performing their best.

Partner Connections

  • Christ's Church of the Valley (Peoria, AZ) sent a special needs team to visit us this term. They conducted a medical camp and Vacation Bible School (VBS) for 56 children living with special needs. They also provided caregivers with parental training. The team also hosted an uplifting Shine Dance event for over 150 children with special needs and their caregivers. Joy and love filled the air as families shared meaningful moments together. Each family was given a food basket to share as a family.
