Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Alice is a mother of two, her son Mark, now in second grade at the Baba Dogo Center, and her younger child, a three-year-old who has not yet started school. They live in the Kariadudu area of Baba Dogo. When Alice’s husband left the family because he couldn’t provide for them, she was left alone to care for their children.

When Mark was enrolled at our school in 2022, Alice was living with her parents. Her income from occasional day jobs wasn’t enough to cover rent, let alone food or medical expenses for Mark, who suffers from a chronic health condition. Their living space was overcrowded and lacked basic furniture. Alice was overwhelmed, worn out, discouraged, and unsure of how she would care for her children. She wasn’t connected to a church at the time, so she also lacked spiritual support during one of the hardest seasons of her life.

MOHI social workers met Alice during a routine home visit. She had heard of MOHI but hadn’t inquired about a spot for Mark because she didn’t have any money and felt completely defeated. The team listened to her story and offered encouragement. They reminded her that her situation wasn’t hopeless and encouraged her to take small steps of faith. Mark was placed on the waiting list for enrollment.

Soon, Mark was accepted into our kindergarten program. From there, things began to change. Social workers continued regular visits to check in on the family, offering emotional support and encouragement. During these visits, Alice often shared her dream of opening a hair salon. She had some training in hairdressing and believed that starting a business could transform her family's future.

In 2024, a team from Eastside Christian Church visited Baba Dogo to support a community home improvement project. Alice was selected as a beneficiary and received a double-decker bed, bedding, and kitchen supplies. As the team finished their visit, Alice shared a prayer request—that she could start her own salon. The visiting partners were moved by her story and committed to helping her make that dream a reality. That November, they returned with salon equipment just for her.

At the beginning of this year, Alice was finally able to rent a small space and open her salon. Though she started with just a few clients, the business is growing steadily. She’s now earning enough to support her family. Best of all, she can run her business while caring for her children, creating a secure and nurturing environment for them.

Thanks to better nutrition and regular medical care, Mark’s health has improved. Alice has also begun attending a local church, encouraged by the continued gospel outreach from MOHI staff. While she hasn’t made a personal decision for Christ yet, she recognizes God’s hand in her life and is open to the journey of faith. She has also joined MOHI’s table banking program, where she’s saving money to expand her business.

Alice’s story is a powerful reminder of God’s goodness and the incredible things He is doing in our families and communities. We pray that Alice and her children will continue to grow in every area of their lives—spiritually, emotionally, and economically.

Partner Connections

  • We were thrilled to have students from Valley Christian Church visit us this term. They conducted a VBS for over 300 students that was focused on trusting God. The students had a great time in their lessons, bible sessions, music, games and sports. They were also able to conduct 90 home visits in three days and our parents welcomed them into their homes with warm hearts full of joy.
