Hope Transforms: A Success Story

*Allan, now 22 years old, is the third born of four brothers. His childhood was marked by hardships because his family fell apart when he was very young, and his siblings were adopted by different relatives. Allan was adopted by his aunt, who brought him to the capital city, Nairobi, to live with her family. Life was never easy. With no stable income, Allan’s aunt, Ruth, resorted to selling locally brewed illicit liquor to survive.

When the business was eventually banned, she could no longer afford rent. A kind landlord offered her a cramped space under a staircase as a place to stay. Though the space offered a shelter from the elements of nature, its conditions, coupled with stress and poverty, took a toll on Ruth’s health. Medical services for her were out of reach.

Despite these challenges, Ruth remained hopeful. In 2009, she enrolled Allan in kindergarten at our center. Henceforth, school became a safe place for Allan. He always looked forward to the daily meals and morning devotions, which helped him nurture his faith. In 2019, Allan sat for his eighth-grade exit tests and scored 306 points out of the possible 500. He later joined MOHI Ndovoini Boys High School.

At this point, her aunt could not even afford his transport, school supplies or even basic needs. Through our social workers, MOHI helped him through it all. He stayed disciplined, avoided negative peer influences, and remained committed to his goals.

In 2023, Allan sat his national high school exit test and did well. This was a great encouragement to other students with similar challenges. MOHI offered him an internship, giving him a chance to earn while gaining real-world experience. He is now set to join a university later this year.

Allan remains an inspiration to many students and a testament to the fact that your past does not determine your future.

The parents had a wonderful time and gained valuable knowledge on how to care for them, while the children truly enjoyed themselves.

  • We also hosted Westside Christian Church, which carried out fluoride treatment to all of our students, among other activities.
  • We were proud to have the Hans' family at our center. They did one home visit and shared gifts with their sponsored students.
