Flood Update:

Since this Community Update was written before the extreme rain and flooding took place in Kenya, we want to provide a quick update.

Although we recently experienced heavy rains and flooding, we are thankful to report that our center was not damaged. Unfortunately, however, many of our students and their families were directly affected by the flooding. We are connecting with them to provide support.

If you'd like to donate to MOHI's flood relief efforts, you can donate here.

Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Tony*, is a student in kindergarten at our Mabatini Center. He comes from a humble family with a single mother. Their modest home, located near the Mabatini Center in Mathare, is made of iron sheets. Tony and his mother have navigated the challenges of their community, facing numerous obstacles along the way.

Tony's mother works as a casual laborer in laundry services, earning approximately $1.50 per day, which is barely enough to meet their basic needs. The Mabatini community, where they reside, grapples with issues such as drug abuse, early marriages, and a prevalent disbelief in education and church attendance.

In desperation, Tony's mother often left him at the gates of Missions of Hope Mabatini School, relying on the generosity of the security guards to provide him with lunchtime meals while she sought assistance from neighbors. With only one meal a day and difficulty paying rent, their situation was dire.

The social worker learned of Tony's plight through the security guards and intervened to understand the family's circumstances. Despite initially feeling abandoned, Tony's mother trusted that MOHI would care for her son. A compassionate agreement was reached, ensuring that she would collect food for Tony daily instead of leaving him at the gate.

When Tony turned 4 in November 2022, he was prioritized for enrollment in MOHI's program the following year. His mother, relieved and hopeful for her son's future, eagerly embraced the opportunity for him to receive a quality education and proper nutrition.

Once enrolled, Tony thrived academically and spiritually, eagerly sharing his learnings from morning devotions with his mother. Through his influence, she became curious about the Bible and after some time, gave her life to Christ. Through prayers, Tony's mother secured a permanent job as a housekeeper, improving their financial stability.

The family is deeply grateful to MOHI for their support during challenging times and acknowledges God's providence in their journey. Tony is thriving in school and at home, with a newfound sense of responsibility and faith.
