Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Pauline* lives in the Kariobangi community, just a short distance from our center, with her grandchildren. Life has never been easy, but she has worked tirelessly to give her grandchildren the best life she could. Despite her efforts, the family faced numerous challenges, including poverty, limited access to education, and significant social barriers.

Determined to change the course of her family’s future, Pauline, supported by MOHI social workers in Kariobangi, joined a growth group. She learned how to make detergent, bleach, and toilet cleaner. On top of this, the group also teaches important lessons on health and hygiene, both in the home and the community. During the team meetings, they often share the word of God. This has given Pauline a place to grow spiritually. Her deep love for God is evident. Now she has become a role model in her neighborhood.

With support from dedicated teachers and social workers, Pauline’s grandchildren have flourished academically. They are excelling in school, uncovering their potential and gaining confidence along the way. As the grandchildren continued to thrive, Pauline took her new skills a step further. She began teaching others in the community how to make soap and soon started selling the soap to the school. The income she earned allowed her to start saving and eventually launch her own small business.

This new financial independence has transformed the family’s life. They now experience greater stability, and they’ve embraced education, spiritual growth, and economic empowerment in a way that has touched every area of their lives.

Pauline now serves as a Community Health Volunteer. She actively mobilizes neighbors to seek medical attention when needed and encourages healthy choices in the community. Last year, she was elected as the parents' representative for one of her grandchildren's classes, a reflection of the leadership and respect she has earned.

The transformation of Pauline’s family is a shining example of what’s possible when faith, education, and empowerment come together. Their journey is now a source of hope and inspiration for the entire community.

Term Highlights

  • We are grateful to God for enabling us to hold a very powerful 3-day open-air crusade, followed by a synergy Sunday service (a church service that brings the staff, MOHI parents and community members together) this first term. This was done in conjunction with a local church and MOHI Technical Training Institute. Ten people gave their lives to Christ, and two of them joined the local partnering church.

  • As part of community involvement, our Grade 4 and 5 students were glad to learn how to make compost manure and liquid fertilizer from a community volunteer who practices small-scale farming in the school neighborhood. This was an enjoyable practical agriculture lesson for the students.

  • Our students were excited to receive storybooks donated by our sister school, Pangani Center. The new books were an exciting addition to our already existing collection. Soon, Kariobangi will have a robust library.

Partner Connections

  • MOHI's longtime partners, Mike and Jill Shuck, visited our center and led impactful staff devotions. During our time together, we learned about managing resources in God's kingdom.

Prayer Requests

  • Thank God for the new sponsors that we have received this new year. Child sponsorship changes a child's life, letting them know they are loved and appreciated even from someone so far away.

  • Pray for the families we serve and the Kariobangi community at large, for peace and unity in the homes, so that we can have safe home environments for our students to grow up in.

  • Pray for safety and protection over our Kariobangi community members.

  • Thank God for all the new kindergarten students who have started their academic journey with MOHI. Pray for them as they adjust to being in school.
