Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Megan* is 12 years old. She joined Missions of Hope Coram Deo Center in the year 2020 in kindergarten, and currently, is in Grade 4. She is the fourth born in a family of five. All of Megan's older siblings have moved out and no longer live with her parents, so it's just Megan and her younger sibling left.

She used to live with her single mother in a single room in a village near the major town. Their mother is a casual laborer who works on people's farms for a living. Sometimes Megan's mother would go to work on farms far away and leave the kids alone.

With her mom's busy schedule, Megan would often come to school late and sad. Megan enjoyed school, but it was not always easy to get there. Sometimes Megan and her little brother would miss school entirely because there was no one at home to help them get ready. All of these issues made Megan sad, and she often kept to herself; she would be found sleeping when other kids were playing outside during recess. She did not actively participate in class either and would always shy away when questioned by her teacher.

Her class teacher noticed this and informed the social worker, who had a counseling session with Megan to find out what was going on. They realized that Megan's mother used to leave them alone in the house and go to work, and whenever Megan needed anything for school, the mother could not provide. The money Megan’s mother was making was not enough to sustain the family.

The social worker went to visit Megan's mother and had a discussion with her about Megan's feelings. She realized how important it was for Megan to have a stable household and someone to help navigate growing up. They talked about that need.

Megan's mom soon got a job on a wheat farm in Narok town which would enable her to provide for her family and ensure that Megan and her little brother have all they need. Megan's older sister, who started a grocery stand, offered to take Megan and her little brother in as their mother went to work in Narok town.

Megan and her brother have thrived in this arrangement as their mother caters to their needs while they live with their sister. Their mother is able to visit regularly as she works towards starting her own business in the future.
