In Pursuit of a Dream: Sharon’s Story
“With God, everything is possible.” This is the statement Sharon lives by—a truth that has carried her through life’s challenges and propelled her towards a future she once only dreamed of.
Sharon, a 24-year-old seamstress, works at Stitches of Hope, the garment production unit of Missions of Hope International (MOHI). There, she creates uniforms for MOHI schools and garments for other organizations—a job that aligns perfectly with her lifelong passion. Since childhood, Sharon dreamed of becoming a dressmaker and fashion designer. Despite facing significant obstacles, she never let go of that vision. The lastborn of four siblings, Sharon grew up with her parents in Kisumu, a county in western Kenya.
“When I was in Grade 7, my mother passed away, and that is when hardships began.”
Her mother’s death marked a turning point. The family faced severe financial struggles, which affected every aspect of their lives.
“My father was a farmer and earned very little income. My mother would offer support when she was alive, but after her demise, things became tough to the point where my siblings and I would be sent away from school due to lack of school fees.”
Still, Sharon’s father worked tirelessly to support the family. By God’s grace, Sharon managed to complete both her primary and high school education. In 2020, full of hope, she moved to Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city, to live with her elder brother, believing he would help her pursue college.
But those hopes were quickly dashed. Her brother couldn’t afford to send her to school, and Sharon was devastated. Watching her peers attend universities or start jobs while her own life stood still was deeply discouraging. And yet, she clung to her dream—with faith as small as a mustard seed—believing that doors would one day open.
And in time, they did.
In 2021, Sharon discovered MOHI. Through sponsorship, she enrolled in a three-month Fashion Design course. After completing the program and passing her exams, she began an internship at Stitches of Hope, where she could put her skills into practice.
Her dedication and talent didn’t go unnoticed. Sharon was promoted and offered a full-time position at Stitches of Hope—a dream come true. Today, she finds great joy in doing what she loves. Creating uniforms for MOHI students, knowing they are receiving the education she once fought so hard to access, gives her a deep sense of fulfillment.
Sharon’s life has not only been transformed financially, but spiritually. MOHI’s holistic approach has helped her grow in faith through regular devotions, Bible studies, and mentorship. She also credits the healthy work environment with helping her cultivate a positive mindset and personal well-being. Now fully independent, Sharon lives on her own, no longer reliant on her brother. She’s learned how to manage her finances, save intentionally, and plan for her future. Her biggest dream? To one day own her fashion line.
A piece of advice she adds to her story is:
|
" Don’t lose hope because the challenges you are facing are just for a moment. An opportunity will come and it will change everything. My hopes were once shattered, my dreams far-fetched, but MOHI stitched my hope together and now I can smile because my tomorrow is assured. |
