From Struggle to Stability: Elizabeth's Story
Living in a remote village in Kenya, Elizabeth was raising five children after the death of her husband. With almost no reliable income and one child living with a disability, each day brought new burdens and painful uncertainty.
Today, Elizabeth’s story looks very different.
Through the ministry of Missions of Hope International, Elizabeth and her children have experienced practical support, spiritual encouragement, and renewed hope for the future. What once felt impossible has begun to give way to stability, faith, and transformation.
A Mother Carrying Heavy Burdens
After her husband died in the early years of their marriage, Elizabeth was left to care for her five children on her own. The loss was not only emotional. It also meant losing the family’s main source of support.

She worked hard to provide. Using her basketry skills, she started a small broom-selling business. But the income was too little to meet even her family’s most basic needs. In the struggle to keep her family afloat, life became increasingly difficult and overwhelming.
Looking back, Elizabeth remembers how heavy that season was:
“Before MOHI came into my life, I had a lot of heavy burdens. My husband passed on, and after his death, I was left stranded with my kids. If it depended on me, they would have just stayed at home.”
The hardship affected every part of her life. There was a season when family relationships were strained, and Elizabeth carried deep loneliness alongside the daily pressure of survival.
She was also caring for a child living with a disability who could neither speak nor walk. Meeting her child’s daily needs required steady love and perseverance, even as she navigated grief, poverty, and the responsibility of raising her children alone.
When MOHI Entered the Community
Things began to change when MOHI established a Hope Center in Elizabeth’s community.
Through MOHI’s Hope Center, families gained access to quality Christian education, economic empowerment, medical care and spiritual support. For Elizabeth, this was not just the arrival of a new center. It was the beginning of a different way forward.
MOHI staff began visiting her home regularly. They encouraged her, shared the Gospel, and invited her to consider a life rooted in faith and community. She remembers those visits clearly:
“These people of God kept coming to our home. They encouraged me to start living a better life and join church.”
At first, Elizabeth hesitated. She feared that making changes would leave her family even more vulnerable. But the persistence, compassion, and care shown by the MOHI team stirred something in her. Their presence reminded her that she was seen, loved, and not alone.
A Turning Point
Over time, Elizabeth became curious about the faith she saw lived out in the people visiting her home. Their love, consistency, and encouragement helped open her heart.
She began attending church and started making changes in her life. Through that process, Elizabeth came to understand God’s love for her in a personal way. Her faith began to grow, and that spiritual transformation shaped the practical choices she made as a mother.
She chose to leave behind her old way of life and pursue a better future for her family. That change was not easy. Income was still inconsistent, and the pressures of daily life remained real. But now Elizabeth had spiritual support and a community walking with her.
This is part of the beauty of MOHI’s Christ-centered ministry. The care families receive is not only practical. It also points them to the love of God, who brings hope, healing, and lasting transformation.
Holistic Support That Strengthened the Whole Family
As Elizabeth continued to seek help, MOHI came alongside her family in tangible ways. She was given an opportunity to work as a cleaner at the Hope Center, providing a more stable source of income. Her coworkers also supported her broom business by purchasing from her when they could.
Her family also gained access to medical care through MOHI. While her child living with a disability still faces challenges, Elizabeth found relief and encouragement through the professional support available at the center. She now lives with hope that her child will continue to receive care and make meaningful progress.
Her children were also enrolled at MOHI’s Napuu school, where they began receiving a quality Christian education, nutritious meals, spiritual support, and medical care.
What made this season of change so meaningful for Elizabeth was that it reached more than one immediate need. Her family began receiving care, encouragement, and practical support in ways that touched daily life, faith, and her children’s future. Little by little, what once felt broken in every direction began to look different.
Standing Firm for Her Children’s Future
Elizabeth’s challenges did not end when her children enrolled in school. Some relatives discouraged her from continuing her daughters’ education. But Elizabeth stood firm. She remained committed to a different future for her children, and that perseverance has borne fruit.
Today, her children are growing up in a more stable environment, and her firstborn has graduated from university and is now working to help change her family and community.
A Story of Hope That Reaches Beyond One Family
Elizabeth’s transformation also began influencing those around her. Her sister came to faith in Christ and was encouraged to take her own children to school. What started in one home has spread outward.
When Elizabeth reflects on all that has changed, her gratitude is clear.
“My life has changed a lot. I even get along better with other people and the community.”
Her story is not only about surviving hardship. It is about what can happen when someone is met with the love of God, supported by a faithful community, and given access to holistic care.
It is also a reminder that transformation often extends far beyond a single person. As Elizabeth’s life changed, her children’s futures changed. Her family relationships changed. Her witness in the community changed.
Just as importantly, Elizabeth’s story reflects her own courage. She kept working. She kept hoping. She made difficult choices for the sake of her children’s future. And by God’s grace, she continues to move forward with strength and faith.
