A Calling Shaped Over Time: Elenah’s Story

By MOHI on Jun 23, 2026 1:46:03 PM

There was a time when Elenah could hardly afford rent or regular meals for her family. Today, she is a teacher at MOHI, helping shape the lives of children in vulnerable communities like the one where she once lived.

Her journey has unfolded over many years through hardship, perseverance, and the support of people who walked alongside her family. Along the way, God nurtured in her a deep love for children and a calling that continues to grow.

A Young Woman With Hope for More

Elenah grew up in a humble family and wanted to become the best version of herself. But with six children in the home, her parents could not afford to educate all of them through university.

After finishing twelfth grade, she came to the city hoping to find work and help support her parents and siblings. Instead, she found herself in one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements.

“After my twelfth grade, I came to the city to look for greener pastures and support my parents and siblings, but ended up in one of the city’s largest informal settlements. I used to think and feel poor, but here, I experienced real poverty,” she recalls.

Not long after, Elenah got married and began raising her children in Mathare. Life was difficult, but even then, she held on to hope.

“It wasn’t the easiest thing,” she says. “We could hardly pay our monthly rent of $5.50. It was also difficult to get regular meals for our young family. Nonetheless, I still believed that one day it would be possible to have more than enough and even help others.”

How Support Began to Take Shape

Over time, new opportunities began to take shape for Elenah’s family through MOHI’s presence in her community.

When MOHI started a school nearby, she enrolled her children there. Soon after, an opportunity opened for her to serve as a cook at the school. That role brought steadier work for her family and connected them to a community of care.Elenah in the Kitchen2

“Getting a job at MOHI was such a relief for me. I was saved from the uncertainty of inconsistent casual jobs that I faced daily. My children also had access to at least two meals every school day, and whenever they were sick, I was assured of quality healthcare for them. A new light had shone in our lives.”

Her story reflects the way holistic support can strengthen a family over time. Education for her children, daily meals, medical care, and meaningful work all became part of the foundation God used to help her family move forward.

A Mother’s Burden, a Community That Walked Alongside

One season was especially heavy when one of Elenah’s daughters experienced ongoing chest and stomach complications. The illness affected her well-being and made school difficult.

Elenah remembers the relief her family felt when her daughter received treatment through MOHI’s care.

“MOHI provided treatment for our daughter at no cost. And in that moment, I realized that I had found a new family in MOHI.”

That experience deepened her commitment to the children she served each day.

“Every day as I cooked for over 1,000 students, I was full of joy because I knew I was using my gift to serve them. To me, it wasn’t just cooking; it was ministry.”

This is part of what makes Elenah’s story so meaningful. Even in hardship, she did not stop caring for others. As support surrounded her family, her own calling continued to grow.

Growing Into Her Calling as a Teacher

After serving as a cook for several years, Elenah took another step forward. In 2009, she enrolled in college to study Early Childhood Development Education.

“My desire to dive deeper into a career that nurtures the dreams of young children from vulnerable communities drove me to enroll in college. My dream turned into a reality.”

She also shares that her husband was one of her greatest encouragers during that season, helping make it possible for her to continue learning while raising a family.

After graduating, Elenah began teaching at MOHI’s Joska Center, where she continues to serve today.Elenah in class3

“Waking up to help my students attain all-round development in academics and character offers me an exceptional kind of joy,” she says.

Her classroom is a place of learning and encouragement each day. As she teaches, she is helping children grow not only in academics, but also in character and confidence.

A Story Still Unfolding

Looking back, Elenah sees God’s faithfulness across many years. She sees it in her own perseverance and in the people who walked alongside her family.

“Our firstborn daughter is now a counseling psychologist,” she says, beaming with joy.

For a mother who once struggled to provide regular meals, watching her daughter become a professional is deeply meaningful.

“Our daughter’s success leaves no doubt that every child can excel and help cultivate a holistically empowered community.”

Today, Elenah and her family live in their own home, something that once felt far beyond reach. And still, her story does not end with what she has received. It continues in the lives she now helps shape every day.

“Every day as I walk home from school, I feel so fulfilled, so happy. I look forward to the next day so that I can continue impacting the lives that God has placed in my hands. My thirst for transforming these lives is unquenchable!”

A Beautiful Picture of Partnership
