Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Ruth* is a single mother of six, two boys and four girls and a resident of Natoot village, in Turkana County. She has experienced a remarkable transformation with the support of Missions of Hope International (MOHI).  Four of her children are currently in school under the MOHI program.

Ruth's journey has been one of resilience and growth. After the passing on of her husband, the family’s breadwinner, Ruth turned to brewing alcohol as a means to support her family. However, through MOHI’s intervention, which included economic empowerment, evangelism by the social worker, and guidance from the school chaplain, Ruth found faith and was introduced to a local church in her community. There, she has grown spiritually and now actively participates in church fellowships. She has become a  women’s leader and plays a key role in spreading the good news within her church.

Unlike before, where she used to brew alcohol, Ruth transitioned to weaving, a skill that became her primary source of income. At one point she had tried farming, but the harsh weather conditions in her region destroyed her crops, leaving her without a stable income. Ruth also faces significant challenges in caring for one of her children with special needs, who requires full assistance with daily routines. Thankfully, her child receives medical support and supplements at MOHI's Napuu clinic.

Although weaving provided some income, it was not enough to meet her family’s needs. Fortunately, the social worker referred Ruth for a job at MOHI, and she now works as a janitor at Turkana High School. This job has provided Ruth with financial stability, allowing her to be self-sufficient. She enjoys her work and is highly competent. With her steady income, she is able to meet her family’s needs without struggle.

Ruth’s story showcases the powerful transformational impact of MOHI. Thanks to the opportunities and support she has received, Ruth has made significant strides in providing a better life for her family.
