Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Lisa*, an eleven-year-old girl, is the firstborn in a family of three. She is in sixth grade, and her younger brother, Tim*, is in kindergarten. Lisa is a disciplined and bright student. Her family is headed by a single mother who lives in a single-room house near the center. The family moved to this house a year ago.

Their mother was previously married but endured abuse from her husband. He physically, verbally, and emotionally abused her and the children. At one point, he even threw them out of the house at midnight. Despite the abuse, their mother initially tried to salvage her marriage. However, the situation worsened, and she eventually left him last year.

After leaving her husband, they lived with their mother’s brother for a while. However, due to financial constraints and the burden of caring for her and her children, she had to move to a small, iron-sheet house. The family struggled financially, and their mother was unable to pay school fees for her children, forcing them to stay home from school.

Worried about her children's future, the mother sought help from a parent at Missions of Hope International. They told her about MOHI and she went to Pangani Center to talk to a social worker. As a result, Lisa and Tim were enrolled in the program last year. Lisa joined Grade 5, and Tim started kindergarten.

When Tim and Lisa first joined Missions of Hope International, their mother felt hopeless and lost. However, she found encouragement, gave her life to Christ, and joined a local church. Over time, she regained her strength and found a job as a community worker in Mathare. She also joined a parent empowerment group where she can save money, take out loans, and learn business skills.

Today, their mother is able to provide for her children's basic needs. She has moved to a better house, a single-room house made of stone and not iron sheets.

Their mother is deeply grateful to Missions of Hope International for providing her with hope, strength, and the resources to overcome her challenges. She is committed to her faith and believes that her life has been transformed.

Lisa and Tim have also experienced significant transformation. They have improved physically, spiritually, emotionally, and academically.
