Hope Transforms: A Success Story

In one of the most remote villages in northern Kenya, 15-year-old Ken* and his 13-year-old sister, Kyla*, faced challenges no child should bear. Their lives were shaped by extreme poverty. The two children lived in a small manyatta (a traditional house made of mud, sticks and grass) with their mother, who worked tirelessly on casual jobs. The community is ravaged by illicit alcohol brewing, trapping many families in cycles of poverty and addiction.

It was during a routine home visit in the area that a MOHI social worker witnessed a police operation arresting people at a local brew den. Unfortunately, Ken’s mother was among those arrested. The social worker found Ken and his sister helpless. That was when he learned how they had stopped attending school, wandering hungry through the village with their mother. The social worker realized that no one was taking care of them. He took immediate action and enrolled Ken and Kyla into the MOHI program to help restore their hope and education. Ken was then admitted to the boarding section. 

Since joining the program, their lives have undergone significant changes. Ken is now in Grade 9, whereas his sister, Kyla, is in Grade 6. Ken’s health has improved significantly, and his academic performance has shown steady progress. His teachers describe him as hardworking, respectful and cheerful. The boarding facility provides a conducive environment for his studies. He has become a role model to his peers.

With support and counseling, his mother was able to quit alcohol and turn her life around. She now runs a small butcher shop that provides a stable income to meet the family’s basic needs. The family attends a local church weekly, where they get spiritual nourishment.

Term Highlights

• Our music team represented the school in the Kenya Music Festival and excelled, advancing to the regional level and showcasing talent and dedication.
• We hosted successful partnership visits, which affirmed the strength of our shared mission. These visits deepened relationships, and we thank God for strength throughout the season.
• We held a Parents' Annual General Meeting and a Board of Management meeting. These initiatives made a significant contribution to student engagement and academic improvement. 
  
  

Church Highlights

• We conducted several discipleship sessions for students in Grades 7 and 8.
• We hosted a special partnership service with a team from Eastside Christian Church. 
• Thirty-five youths gathered for a seminar held at the church. It was a powerful time of learning that focused on the role and responsibility of the youth in their community.

Partner Connections

• We were pleased to host a team from Eastside Christian Church. They blessed us through home enhancement and a medical team that offered dental services. The team also carried out home visits, blessing them with food baskets and prayers.
• A team from Summit Christian Church visited us this term. 
• The Parkview Christian Church team also visited us. They conducted VBS for 444 students and made home visits. The students had amazing moments with their teachings, craft and games.
• LifeSpring Christian Church also visited our center. They interacted with our students and even joined our church service.
• We were pleased to host the Youngs, who conducted leadership and teacher training on classroom strategies. It was very impactful.
