Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Ivan* is a Grade 3 student in Missions of Hope Grogan Center. He comes from a family of five and is being raised by a single mother.
We came to learn about Ivan when he was in Grade 1. At the time, his family was going through significant financial challenges. Ivan would come to school hungry, and the effects began to show. Out of desperation, he started stealing from small roadside food vendors. Ivan could also steal from teachers while at school.
Soon, Ivan began skipping school altogether. His mother would prepare him every morning, but he would not show up. He would sneak to the neighboring dumpsite to collect scrap metals so that he could sell them later.
We reached out to his mother and talked about Ivan’s struggles. As a team, his mother, the school chaplain, and the social worker developed a plan. Ivan would be allowed to carry cooked food from school to home in order to share with his young sister. Ivan was then counselled and encouraged to understand his mother’s current situation. Slowly, change began to manifest. He shunned away from the stealing habit, started attending school daily and focused more on his studies. He was even identified as the most improved student in his class in the year 2024.
At the beginning of this year, his mother secured a job as a janitor at our Baba Dogo Center, bringing financial stability to their home. Currently, Ivan is thriving in school. He attends class faithfully, performs well and has joined the Scouts Club.
We thank God for the transformation that has been witnessed in Ivan’s life and his family, too. We can’t wait to see this transformation go a full circle!
