Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Born in 2005, *Becky’s world was redefined when her father passed away that same year. She grew up watching her mother’s quiet struggle to provide for them as a single parent. Along the way, her mother remarried, introducing a stepfather into their lives.
Their life was marked by scarcity; a single room home, constant worry about rent and the daily challenge of putting food on the table. However, hope found its way to their doorstep in 2010 when Becky, at age five, enrolled in preschool at Kiamaiko Center. MOHI became more than just a school. It was a place where Becky could learn, dream and for a few hours each day, escape the anxieties of home. She progressed through the grades until she completed eighth grade in 2019. She then joined MOHI’s Joska Center for her high school education.
Unfortunately, her stepfather separated from her mother, leaving her mother as the sole breadwinner again and making the struggle to meet basic needs even more difficult. Yet through it all, Becky refused to let her circumstances define her. She gave her life to Christ in 2022 while in Grade 10.
In 2024, during a Mnara mentorship program (Mnara means ‘pillar.’ A MOHI program that empowers twelfth-grade graduates during their gap year), Becky desired to give back to the community. Inspired by her own journey, Becky returned to Kiamaiko as a volunteer social worker for six months, giving back to the community that had given her so much.
Today, Becky stands as proof of transformation. She is a camp mentor at MOHI’s Angaza Discovery Camp (an intensive discipleship camp at the Kenyan coast for all MOHI sixth and tenth graders). The young girl who was once worried about her mother's inability to pay the bills now helps her mother with that burden. With her job, she can now support her mother with basic needs, easing the load and bringing a measure of stability and peace to their home.
But she’s not done yet. Becky looks forward to studying Guidance and Counseling Psychology to heal, empower, and transform lives, just as MOHI transformed hers.
