Getting Involved with Child Sponsorship in Kenya

By MOHI on Jun 6, 2023 2:44:00 PM

Sponsorship can create miraculous change in a child’s life. At MOHI, we see this each and every day!

When a child in Kenya realizes that someone believes in their dreams and is willing to support them as they reach for a better life, we can see firsthand the transformative power of child sponsorship.

As you embark on this journey of compassion and support, you're not only providing financial assistance, but you're also instilling confidence and fostering dreams in young hearts yearning for a better life.

The mission is simple: to give each child the opportunity to thrive and break free from the cycle of poverty. And this journey is easier to be a part of than you might think.

Ways to get involved with child sponsorships in Kenya

Many organizations, including our own, work tirelessly to improve the lives of underprivileged children in Kenya. While each organization has their own unique opportunities for involvement, consider these examples from our own work (MOHI currently operates 25 schools in Kenya and Liberia, spanning from urban slums to the remote desert regions).

  • General sponsorship: this popular sponsorship approach ensures that the sponsored child benefits from a high-quality Christian education, nutritious meals, essential healthcare services, and exposure to the transformative teachings of Jesus Christ. By providing well-rounded assistance, this sponsorship addresses various aspects of the child's life, fostering a healthy and holistic development.
  • Addressing urgent sponsorship needs: Sponsors can also offer direct support to children in particularly vulnerable situations, such as an unsponsored children’s fund, which allows organizations like MOHI to take more kids into the program than we have sponsors for.
  • Stay connected with your child: we encourage sponsors to write letters, exchange photos, and consider providing gifts that can help the child and their family. Gifts like school supplies, clothing, or a food basket not only meet basic needs, but also serve as expressions of love and support. With letters you can follow up on their development and stay informed about their lives, creating an enriching bond.
  • Meet your child: If you will be traveling to the area where your sponsored child lives, we can make arrangements for you to meet them!

How does my sponsorship help children in Kenya?

By addressing the children's physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, child sponsorship programs in Kenya create a positive impact on the lives of the children, their families, and their communities, empowering them to build a better future.

Studies show that sponsored children are more likely to pursue higher education or vocational training, equipping them with the skills necessary to find meaningful employment and break the cycle of poverty — even becoming leaders in their own communities.

Each child sponsorship program is different, but this is what children in Kenya can expect with MOHI:

  • Quality Christian education: Child sponsorship programs like MOHI ensure children receive a well-rounded, faith-based education that covers essential subjects and skills. Children are taught the principles of the Christian faith, providing them with a solid moral foundation and a sense of hope and purpose in life.
  • Two nutritious meals per school day: Sponsored children receive at least two healthy meals each school day, ensuring they have the energy and focus needed to excel in their studies. Additional meals, feeding programs, and supplements to fight malnutrition are also common practice.
  • Access to necessary healthcare services: Sponsorship programs often provide basic medical care, including regular check-ups, vaccinations, and treatment for common illnesses, helping to ensure the overall well-being of the sponsored children.
  • Guidance in social development: Kenya’s school system has a gap year between high school and university. We allow students to remain in the sponsorship program during this gap year, as we have a special program that focuses on life skills and work skills during this gap year.
  • Guidance in spiritual development: In addition to formal education, child sponsorship programs often include mentoring, counseling, and extracurricular activities to support children's emotional and spiritual growth.

What is the real impact of sponsorship?

To understand the transformational power of sponsorship, it helps to meet the individuals whose lives were changed by their sponsors.

Let’s start with Jecinta. Jecinta was born and raised in the Mathare valley slums of Kenya. When she was ten, her family lost their shanty home in a fire. She was one of our first students — now, she's an attorney, and seeks to give back.

Jecinta's Story

Virginia is a young girl from a Nairobi slum. Most kids in her slum never end up going to school, but she was sponsored through MOHI, and discovered the joy of learning. Now she dreams of becoming a doctor so she can help other people.

Meet Virginia - Sponsorship

Eleven-year-old Mambelin was born into a family that were pastoralists and spent a lot of time away in the pasturelands, moving their livestock from one place to the other. After he was orphaned, he moved in with his aunt and uncle in a village near a MOHI school. He was enrolled in the MOHI and was given new opportunities to grow.
