Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Margy*, a 52-year-old lady from Nawoitorong village in Turkana County, is a devoted member of her church. As a committed Christian, she is actively involved in church activities. She is a mother of five; two boys and three girls and also takes care of her two grandchildren. Her daughter Concepta graduated from a local high school and her other daughter, Harriet, is in her final year at a local high school. Both are sponsored by MOHI. Margy's husband works as a casual laborer, but his income is insufficient to support their large family, which includes children and grandchildren.

For years, they struggled to provide for the family. Often, the family would go without food and relied on MOHI’s feeding program for the children to get something to eat everyday. They could go as far as receiving help from well-wishers in church. Despite her efforts to make ends meet by washing clothes for neighbors, she frequently found herself without work. Life became hard for Margy and she became overwhelmed by the needs of her family leading her into depression. Their family social worker with the help of the school chaplain would come to visit her and provide spiritual and emotional encouragement frequently.

Last year, things took a positive turn when the social worker told Margy about a job opening at MOHI Turkana High School as a cook. This opportunity changed Margy's life. With a steady income, she was able to start a small grocery business at home, which her daughter now manages. The family's overall health and happiness improved. Margy is admired for her hard work, vision, and determination to uplift her family.
