Greetings from Turkana High School!

Shalom! We reached the end of another term, guided by God's grace. We are deeply grateful for your continued partnership and support. Here are some highlights of the first term of 2024.

Flood Update:

Since this Community Update was written before the extreme rain and flooding took place in Kenya, we want to provide a quick update.

Despite the heavy rains, we are thankful to report that neither our center nor the students we serve were directly affected. We did not experience the flooding that other areas were subject to.

If you'd like to donate to MOHI's flood relief efforts, you can donate here.

Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Lisa*, a 52-year-old resident of Nawoitorong’ village in Turkana Central, is a devoted member of her local church. A mother of five, she has actively supported her children's education, with two attending Turkana High School and Napuu Primary School. Facing financial struggles due to her husband's unpredictable income as a casual laborer, Lisa found herself in a constant battle to provide for her family's basic needs. Some days passed without proper meals, and the family relied heavily on the MOHI feeding program and occasional support from church well-wishers.

Recognizing Lisa's plight, the family's MOHI social worker, along with the school chaplain, provided frequent visits, offering prayers and emotional support. Last year, the social worker recommended Lisa for a job opportunity at MOHI Turkana High School as either a cleaner or a cook, aiming to alleviate her financial burden. Lisa secured a position as a cook, which transformed her life in remarkable ways.

With her newfound stability, Lisa embarked on a new venture—a grocery business operated from her home and managed by her daughter. This additional income stream significantly improved the family's financial situation, providing them with a sense of security and hope for the future.

The positive changes extended beyond financial relief. Lisa's newfound role as a cook brought her a sense of fulfillment and purpose. Her dedication and competence in the kitchen earned her respect within the school community and served as a source of inspiration to others facing similar challenges.

Today, Lisa serves as a beacon of resilience and determination in her church and community, demonstrating that with faith and perseverance, one can overcome even the most daunting obstacles. Her transformation journey serves as a powerful testament to the impact of support and empowerment, reminding us all of the transformative power of hope.
