Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Emma* is a Grade 5 student at our Pangani Center. She lives with her single mother and siblings in the Mathare slums. With no formal education, the mother relies on casual jobs in the neighborhood to make ends meet. The days are usually unpredictable; sometimes she leaves her house very early and returns home late, exhausted, and without having earned anything.
With the mother busy looking for ways to provide for her family, Emma was often left to manage herself, including getting ready for school. Over time, she started skipping classes, sometimes showing up late. Her mother, unaware of her daughter’s behavior, continued with her daily routine.
When our social worker noticed the trend, she reached out to the mother, since each time Emma was confronted, she gave a different reason for her absence from school. The mother was shocked to learn what had been happening. After a heartfelt conversation, Emma opened up about the negative influences and places she had been frequenting. The social worker and the mother worked on a plan to ensure she stayed in school.
Today, Emma has been in school for an entire term. Her performance has really improved, and her relationship with her mother has also been strengthened. She has distanced herself from the bad company, and the social worker makes frequent follow-ups on her progress. Recently, she gave her life to Christ and joined the new believers’ discipleship class.
Her mother is now more engaged in her daughter’s life and keeps a close eye on her progress. The social worker has been reaching out to her with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are grateful to God for the transformation that is taking place in Emma’s life and family.
