Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Emma* is a Grade 5 student at our Pangani Center. She lives with her single mother and siblings in the Mathare slums. With no formal education, the mother relies on casual jobs in the neighborhood to make ends meet. The days are usually unpredictable; sometimes she leaves her house very early and returns home late, exhausted, and without having earned anything.

With the mother busy looking for ways to provide for her family, Emma was often left to manage herself, including getting ready for school. Over time, she started skipping classes, sometimes showing up late. Her mother, unaware of her daughter’s behavior, continued with her daily routine.

When our social worker noticed the trend, she reached out to the mother, since each time Emma was confronted, she gave a different reason for her absence from school. The mother was shocked to learn what had been happening. After a heartfelt conversation, Emma opened up about the negative influences and places she had been frequenting. The social worker and the mother worked on a plan to ensure she stayed in school.

Today, Emma has been in school for an entire term. Her performance has really improved, and her relationship with her mother has also been strengthened. She has distanced herself from the bad company, and the social worker makes frequent follow-ups on her progress. Recently, she gave her life to Christ and joined the new believers’ discipleship class.

Her mother is now more engaged in her daughter’s life and keeps a close eye on her progress. The social worker has been reaching out to her with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are grateful to God for the transformation that is taking place in Emma’s life and family.

  • One hundred and nine students graduated from kindergarten and will be joining Grade 1.
  • Both Grade 6 and 9 students sat for national tests and they will transition to junior and senior schools respectively.

  • We celebrated the baptism of 75 new believers, and 20 church members including one staff member and several students. It was amazing to see all these new believers proclaiming their faith publicly.
  • We carried out door to door evangelism outreach, follow-ups, and a two-day evangelism campaign that brought together church members, MOHI staff, and our trade school (MTTI) students. We reached out to 35 people, and 10 of them gave their lives to Jesus. This effort has significantly contributed to the growth of our church.
  • Our ongoing discipleship class has 20 participants who are eager to deepen their faith. Our ultimate goal remains to share the love of Christ with our community and beyond.
  • During the term, we held a Synergy Sunday service (a service that brings together the community, staff, and students to worship and strengthen teamwork) where almost 200 people came together to worship.

  • We were blessed to host the Garden Spot Village team. The team led a vibrant VBS for Grade 3, 4, and 8 students. The students had a great time learning Bible stories, making crafts, dancing and playing games. In addition, the team made a donation towards the construction of a pre-technical studies workshop, enabling us to purchase essential workshop tools.

  • Pray for good health among students, staff and the community at large.
  • Pray for a smooth transition of students to various levels, especially from junior school to senior school in the coming academic year.
  • We are trusting God for all our students to be fully sponsored; therefore, we are praying for more partners.
