Greetings from Nyeri!

Hello and praise the Lord. We are thankful to God for seeing us through the term and for all the milestones He has helped us achieve. As we come to the end, allow us to share some of the term’s highlights.

Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Steve* is a Grade 6 student at Missions of Hope Nyeri Center. He joined the school in 2022 as a Grade 3 student. He is the second born in a family of four.

Before joining MOHI, Steve lived with his grandmother because his mother had abandoned him. Life was difficult. The grandmother struggled to take good care of him. Food was hard to come by. He was malnourished and looked unkempt. He often missed school which resulted in poor academic performance. Over time, he developed antisocial behaviors like stealing and pickpocketing.

His school attendance became so irregular that he sometimes missed school for up to two weeks. One day, after missing school, his grandmother sent him away, and he went missing for days. After several home visits and follow-ups by our social workers, he was spotted in the neighbourhood. He appeared weak, hungry, and depressed.

The social workers, together with the woman who had been hosting Steve, decided to take the matter to the local administration. At the office, after Steve explained his story and the mother was summoned, and she admitted to failure on her part as a parent. After a lengthy but productive talk, the mother agreed to take full responsibility for her son. The social workers conducted a counselling session for him, and he promised to change and be at school every day.

The following day, Steve's mother brought him back to school, and since then, Steve has improved tremendously. He attends school daily and has successfully sat for the Grade 6 national tests this term. His faith has also grown, and he now attends a local church. He is always disciplined, clean, and organized.

Steve’s mother has also been transformed and has started to attend church. After several counseling sessions, she now ensures that Steve is in school every day. She has also stopped begging in the streets and now does casual jobs to provide for her son. In addition to that, she is working to overcome her alcohol addiction.

Through consistent follow-up, care, and God’s grace, Steve’s story has become one of hope and restoration for both him and his mother. Keep praying for him as he takes this transformation journey.
