Greetings from Nyeri!

Greetings and praise the Lord. We thank God for your continued support and partnership as we work towards bringing hope to the community here at our Nyeri Center. Here are some of the highlights of the first term of 2024.

Flood Update:

Since this Community Update was written before the extreme rain and flooding took place in Kenya, we want to provide a quick update.

Despite the heavy rains, we are thankful to report that neither our center nor the students we serve were directly affected. We did not experience the flooding that other areas were subject to.

If you'd like to donate to MOHI's flood relief efforts, you can donate here.

Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Fred* is an 11-year-old boy from the Kiawara slums near our Nyeri Center raised by a single mother. He transferred to our school after experiencing traumatic bullying at his previous public school, leading to his withdrawal. Recognizing his need for support, Fred was recruited. Our social workers counseled Fred, giving him trauma counseling that would help him heal from the trauma he had endured. As time went by, Fred began to open up and regain his confidence. MOHI provided him with the right environment that gave him a new start.

Fred is now thriving in our school, having healed from the stigma of his past experiences. Despite initially struggling academically due to the emotional toll of his past, he has made significant progress. He is particularly excelling in science and technology, areas he now embraces with enthusiasm. He has further exhibited excellent attendance and punctuality since joining us last term, and his confidence in speaking English has markedly improved.

Fred has also experienced growth spiritually. Our emphasis on spiritual development, through daily devotions, Christian Union (student led Christian disciple group) meetings, and mentorship programs, has allowed him to deepen his faith. His favorite verse, John 3:16, is now one he recites with confidence. Additionally, he regularly attends Sunday school at a nearby church.

Thanks to our feeding program, Fred's health has visibly improved, and he now actively participates in sports, with soccer being his favorite. His infectious smile and smart demeanor have become his trademarks.

Due to our support, Fred’s mother has been able to start a small business selling porridge and arrowroots, enabling her to provide for Fred and his siblings more comfortably.

  • We are in a planning phase for the construction of the computer lab. These are truly exciting plans as our students will have access to computers and be exposed to a wide range of career options in the future.

  • Jill from Mountain Christian Church visited our center. She spent time engaging with students, staff, and the local community. Her words of wisdom and encouragement uplifted spirits, and she took time to pray with a family in need.

  • Pray for our staff and their families who are facing health challenges. We ask for prayers for their healing and well-being.

  • Pray for more children to receive sponsorship because sponsorship really changes a child’s life.

  • Pray for the families affected by the floods. May God provide for them and meet them at their point of need.
