Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Alex* is an 18-year-old student at our school. He comes from the Mabatini area in Mathare slums. Alex comes from a family of five, and he joined MOHI in 2014. With limited resources, Alex’s upbringing faced daily struggles, like those of many families in Mathare. His father works as a community health volunteer, while his mother is a housewife. The Mathare slums are characterized by drug abuse, crime, and early marriages, yet Alex has managed to stay focused and disciplined.
MOHI has supported his academic journey from preschool to high school. However, in February 2021, a serious leg injury from playing soccer at home interrupted his studies. Prolonged treatment caused him to miss school, and he eventually had to repeat Grade 10.
Alex’s family sought medical attention when he injured his leg. He underwent a sequestrectomy and skin grafting, but it became clear that the leg had not healed properly. A later fall at home worsened the injury. The family’s financial status limited their options. In 2024, during the second term, through MOHI’s partnerships, Alex was referred to Kijabe Hospital, where the decision to amputate his leg was made. MOHI covered the full cost of surgery and recovery, ensuring Alex received timely, quality care.
The MOHI team and partners offered prayers, encouragement, and a listening ear. Their presence during that season uplifted the family and strengthened their faith during one of the most difficult times of their lives. Through MOHI, Alex has been given a second chance at life, learning, and purpose. He and his family remain deeply grateful to MOHI and its partners for walking this journey with them.
