Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Rita* is a widowed mother of seven living in the Ndovoini community. Life for her family has been incredibly difficult, with day-to-day survival depending on casual jobs. On a good day, she earns around $2.30. Her eldest son also helps by taking on casual jobs, but still, their combined income is barely enough to cover basic needs.
For years, Rita and her children lived in a small, one-room home with mud walls and a rusty corrugated metal roof that leaked whenever it rained. The poor living conditions affected every part of their lives, from health to education to emotional well-being. Yet in the middle of this hardship, hope arrived through MOHI’s intervention.
Austine (Grade 9), Carol (Grade 5), and Evan (Grade 1) were all enrolled in the MOHI Ndovoini Center and became full beneficiaries of the MOHI program. The children now attend school, receive uniforms, school shoes, and learning materials. Through the school feeding program, they enjoy two nutritious meals each day, helping them focus on their studies and grow both physically and mentally. Education, which once seemed out of reach, is now a solid foundation in their lives.
Beyond education, the children and their family receive regular medical care from the school clinic, a huge relief to the family. Spiritually, the family has been encouraged and uplifted through the love and support of the MOHI community and its partners. Through the house enhancement project in partnership with Eastside Christian Church, Rita’s family received a brand-new house, providing a safe, secure, and dignified space they could finally call home.
Economically, the family’s situation has also begun to stabilize. Rita now occasionally earns income through jobs offered within the school, which helps her better meet her family’s daily needs. The family also receives monthly food baskets and other essential items from their sponsors, reducing the weight of everyday financial pressures.
Today, Rita’s family is experiencing transformation. From a leaking mud-walled house and unstable income to a safe home, access to quality education, regular meals, medical care, and spiritual nourishment, the change has been profound. With renewed hope, the children are working hard in school and dreaming big. There is now a clear path toward a better future, not just for the three children in MOHI programs, but for the entire family.
