Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Alice* was born in a remote village in Turkana, the northern part of Kenya. She is the second-born in a family of four, and their family is taken care of by a single mother who works as a casual laborer. They live at their grandmother’s place in a small house built with iron sheets and mud. After her father’s death in 2021, the family was driven out of their home by their in-laws.

In 2018, Alice was spotted by MOHI social workers during a home visit. She was at home on a school day, and upon inquiry, the social worker learned about the family's financial status. They lived in extreme poverty and could hardly afford food. Consequently, she was recruited into the MOHI program in Grade 2.

Since then, Alice’s life has transformed significantly. She now enjoys access to quality Christian education, nutritious meals, and guidance and counselling. Her health has greatly improved, and she has become more confident and focused in her studies. She is currently in Grade 9 and just sat for her national tests. She dreams of joining a university, pursuing a course in nursing, and giving back to the community.

Alice’s mother plans on joining the MOHI Technical Training Institute (MOHI’s skill training program) to study hairdressing and improve her skills to provide a more stable income for the family. Through MOHI’s continued support, Alice and her family are steadily building hope for a brighter and more secure future.

  • Our Grade 6 and 9 students successfully completed their national tests and we are praying that they excel and advance to the next grades.
  • Our mentorship programs were carried out effectively this term, giving students meaningful opportunities to guide and support their peers. The mentorship sessions seek to equip the students with essential life skills.
  • We witnessed significant growth in staff capacity and leadership. Several teachers benefited from professional development opportunities, including promotions and specialized training in supporting students with special needs. These efforts have strengthened classroom instruction, inclusivity, and overall administrative effectiveness.
  • We experienced strong collaboration with parents, partners, and community members in supporting academics and other school activities. The parents readily attended school meetings which showed their improved commitment in their children’s education.

  • We held a powerful worship night at Turkana High School, drawing 376 students and teachers for a time of prayer and spiritual renewal.
  • We encouraged local businessmen and women to prioritize unity within their loan groups, reminding them that standing together is essential, especially when one member faces challenges. Twenty-four people participated in this session.
  • We facilitated a Community Health Evangelism (a strategy that seeks to alleviate poverty using locally available resources) event, which brought together 26 parents for learning and engagement.
  • Thirty-one students who attended the Angaza Discovery Camp (MOHI’s two-week intensive discipleship camp at the Kenyan coast for all sixth graders) joined the new converts class at Turkana High School, continuing their journey of faith and discipleship.
  • We conducted a student leaders’ training, equipping 32 emerging leaders from the school with practical skills and spiritual guidance.

  • A team from the First Church of Christ (Burlington, KY) visited us to check on the MTTI and also held a women's conference. Their training and motivation empowered our female staff and supported education and social welfare initiatives at our center.
  • The Central Christian Church, Arizona team visited our school and conducted home visits within the community, engaging with families and learning about their daily experiences.
  • A medical team from Christ’s Church of the Valley (Peoria, AZ) visited us. They conducted health screenings for all our preschool and Grade 1 students. Their special needs team also conducted training sessions that strengthened our understanding of student diversity, inclusive teaching practices, early identification, and early intervention.

  • Pray for God’s protection and provision for our staff and the families that we serve.
  • Pray for the good health of our students, staff, and their families.
  • Pray for continued sponsorship of our unsponsored students.
