Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Petro* had only known the life of a herdsman since childhood. He spent his days looking after his family’s flock of sheep and goats. He had never stepped into a classroom before. Education was never an option for him.
Everything changed when drought struck, wiping out most of his family’s livestock, their only source of livelihood. With nothing left, the family moved to Lodwar, in the northern part of Kenya, in search of a better life. Petro’s sister was enrolled in a local school, but Petro was expected to continue herding the few goats that had survived.
In 2016, Petro developed a strong desire to pursue an education. He expressed his wish to go to school, but his family refused. For them, survival came before education. However, Petro was determined not to let go of his dream.
In 2018, he made a bold decision to run away from home, leaving behind his herding duties. He fled to the nearby region to pursue his studies. He was enrolled in Grade 2 at a local primary school. Despite never being in a school before, he was still determined to learn new things.
His family did not support his choices, he knew that they would have him juggle between studying and looking after livestock. It was a struggle but he continued to push through. It was at this time that a Missions of Hope International (MOHI) social worker became aware of Petro’s situation. Seeing how the family continued to pull him away from education, the social worker made a bold move to advise his family on the importance of letting Petro focus on school only.
This decision changed everything. Petro’s mother was hesitant at first; however, she reluctantly agreed to let Petro enroll at MOHI.
Once admitted, Petro joined Grade 5 and was moved to MOHI’s boarding section to ensure he was completely pulled away from herding responsibilities. This was a game-changer. For the first time, Petro was free from the burdens of his home and could fully focus on his studies.
Petro thrived at MOHI. His hard work, discipline, and faith set him apart, earning him the trust of his teachers and fellow students. By Grade 7, he was appointed school captain, a role he held with excellence until the end of his tenure in Grade 9, where he is now preparing for his national tests.
Beyond academics, Petro’s spiritual life has also flourished. He had always loved God, but his time at MOHI has deepened his faith. He has become actively involved in ministry and is now a passionate servant of God. He is now a 17 year old Grade 9 student who is more determined than ever. He aspires to be a doctor in the future so he can give back to society the same way he got a helping hand.
His journey is a demonstration of resilience, courage, and the power of education. MOHI did not just give him a chance at school—they gave him a hope and a future.
