Hope Transforms: A Success Story

In the heart of Narewa Village, Turkana Central, young Neema's* journey is one of resilience and newfound hope. As the youngest in a family of seven, raised by her widowed mother, Neema’s early years were marked by hardship. But with the support of Missions of Hope International (MOHI), her story has become one of transformation for herself and her entire family.

When Neema joined the MOHI program, she was a quiet girl, often held back by shyness and self-doubt. Access to education, daily meals, and healthcare at MOHI’s school gave her a sense of stability she had never known. Just as she was settling in, however, Neema began experiencing troubling health symptoms: fever, extreme fatigue, and night sweats. A diagnosis of tuberculosis confirmed her family’s fears, and Neema’s mother faced the difficult task of caring for her while struggling to support her family.

Thanks to MOHI’s health support, Neema’s mother was not alone. The clinical officer stepped in, coordinating Neema’s treatment and offering her mother essential guidance through the long recovery process. Neema’s journey wasn’t easy—she suffered from vision issues, weakness, and a severely low blood count, but with the medical intervention provided, her health gradually improved.

Alongside her physical recovery, Neema received emotional support through guidance and counseling sessions at school. These sessions helped her rebuild her confidence, transforming her from a shy student to an engaged, active learner. She found joy in joining the school’s Christian Union (a Christian club), where she found community and faith to lift her spirit.

Today, as a Grade 6 candidate with a newfound sense of purpose. Her mother, too, has been empowered to pursue her dreams and now successfully runs a small grocery business, providing stability and support for the family. Together, they represent the power of holistic care and community support, showing how Missions of Hope International transforms not just individual lives, but entire families and communities.

  • Our staff members participated in successful community engagement activities. They donated items, visited homes ("went door to door"), and shared food with community members. Additionally, they held prayer sessions and planted a tree in each household.

  • Our Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) has been incredibly involved this term. They held a mentorship event for both boys and girls, where PTA members served as the main guest speakers. They divided themselves into groups to collaborate with our staff on this impactful initiative.

  • Our students had a fantastic experience participating in the spelling bee competition for the first time. The dedicated team of teachers and students worked hard together in preparation, and everyone had a great time.

  • The forestry department in the nearest town generously donated over 500 tree seedlings for planting. Creating a greener Napuu is a central goal of our environmental conservation efforts. We planted some of the seedlings this term and will continue planting more in the future.

  • Jill Shuck visited our MOHI Technical Training Institute (MTTI). She helped us with the procurement of some items for the catering course.

  • The First Christian Church of Santa Maria visited us for VBS. About 700 students benefited. They were taught about the word of God, different craft activities, songs, dances, and different games. They also carried out home visits and distribution of food baskets. We had fun and we thank God.

  • We were delighted to host Rocky Mountain Christian Church for the medical screening of our kindergarten students. Two hundred and sixty four students benefited from the program. We appreciate the great medical support our students were given

  • Pray for God's protection for our students, staff, and the community we serve during this long holiday.

  • Pray for God's provision for the community we serve and the staff during the holiday.

  • Pray to God to open our eyes to see the great things He has for us and a great start and end of the new year.
