Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Born and raised in Napusimoru, in the northern part of Kenya, Edwin’s* upbringing was full of challenges. Edwin’s single mother’s main source of income was casual jobs and charcoal selling. Edwin and his three siblings could barely survive. After separating from Edwin’s father, his mother was burdened by the heavy responsibility of taking care of the kids. Despite the daily struggles, she valued education deeply and ensured that all her children attended school.
Right after joining a MOHI school in Grade 1, Edwin stood out. He displayed remarkable determination, discipline, and a strong desire to learn. His teachers quickly noticed his potential, and with the support of our staff, Edwin was able to stay in school, receive mentorship, and dream of a better future. This was despite the challenges at home.
Edwin demonstrated not just academic brilliance, but also a deep love for God. He became a spiritual and moral leader among his peers. He would lead other students during mentorship sessions and actively participated in church, guiding younger children in prayers, songs, and scriptures. His faith became a source of encouragement not just for him, but for many around him.
By the time Edwin reached Grade 8, his hard work had paid off; he excelled in the exit exams, emerging as the best student in his class and was among the top performers in the region. This remarkable achievement filled his mother, his teachers, and the MOHI team with immense pride.
The outstanding performance saw him get a scholarship that enabled him to join Tambach High School where he flourished again. With the same dedication and hard work, he again emerged among the top students in the high school exit exams!
After completing high school, Edwin returned home to his family. His social worker once again guided him on course selection. Lucky for him, he was placed in a course of his choice, nursing, at one of the best universities in the country!
Before joining university, Edwin decided to give back one of MOHI’s centers. He was linked with the Turkana High School principal and began assisting students. He began tutoring and mentoring. For his services, he received a stipend, which allowed him to buy the last remaining items he needed for his university admission.
Today, Edwin is in his third year of study and on his way to becoming a qualified nurse. His siblings attend school at MOHI’s Napusimoru Center, inspired by their brother’s determination, his faith in God, and his success.
