Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Saruni* is 10 years old and in Grade 3 at Missions of Hope Namarei Center. She comes from a humble family who lives in Namarei village. Saruni and her three siblings were raised by both parents and lived in a manyatta (a traditional house made of mud and wood). Her father, a hardworking and well respected man in the community, would take on any decent job to provide for his family while her mother was a housewife. Tragically, in 2023, Saruni’s father passed away, leaving the family and the community healing from the loss of a man they fondly remember.

With the husband’s death, Saruni’s mother faced a lot of challenges. With no job, she struggled financially and became depressed. MOHI social workers, together with the pastor, stepped in to support the family during this difficult time. Saruni’s mother never got a chance to go to school because in their community, education is not highly valued and girls were often reserved to marry young. The MOHI social worker helped Saruni’s mother enroll in a group empowerment program designed to help parents save money and access loans for investment. These empowerment groups also serve as a platform for discussing different issues in life, sharing the word of God, and learning skills like how to keep a healthy home.

These teachings and support from the groups have transformed Saruni’s mother. She is now even an active church member. With the loan from the empowerment group, she has been able to start a business which has empowered her financially. She can now look after her children with some ease.

Saruni, who now attends school regularly, is very bright and her teachers have a lot of hope that she will excel in her academics. She dreams of becoming a teacher in the future. We continue to pray for Saruni and her family as they move forward with hope and determination.

  • We had our community leaders meeting this term, where we discussed issues affecting the center, the community we serve and the best ways possible to address them. The meeting was a great success and we are looking forward to having more impactful meetings.

  • We are very excited to have had 35 computers installed at our center. Our now fully furnished computer lab is going to be a game changer for our students and staff. Computer literacy can be hard to come by in Northern Kenya, so our students are very privileged to have access to  computers.

  • We are excited that the construction of  another six classrooms is almost done. The new classrooms mean our students will be comfortable in class shielded from the elements. We really give thanks and glory to almighty God.

  • Our students were able to communicate with their sponsors this term through letter writing. This exercise is always exciting for our students. They are able to sharpen their English language skills as well as let their sponsors get to know them.

  • Two students from our center were privileged to have a chance to travel from Marsabit to Nairobi to meet their sponsors. This was very exciting as many of our students don’t get to travel outside of the community.

  • Pray for provision to our Namarei parents so that they can support their children’s education and give them a better life.

  • Pray that our parents will come more to our church services that we have within the school. Most of them shy away from attending services because they are held in classrooms. Pray away that stigma.

  • Pray for the growth of the church at our center and for the entire Namarei community to love God and accept Jesus into their hearts.
