Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Ella* is a mother of four in our MOHI schools; one in MOHI’s Turi High School and three in our Molo Milimani Center. For some years, her family, which lives in our neighborhood, struggled immensely. Her children, though of school-going age, were not in school. Many other kids from the community struggled with drugs and substance abuse.
When MOHI came into the community, Ella saw an opportunity to make her life better. Enrolling her children in school was her first step towards transformation. Together with her husband, she had the opportunity to attend a parents’ meeting, where they learned more about CHE (Community Health Evangelism) and MOHI’s economic empowerment programs.
Both parents joined the MOHI Capital Limited Microfinance Loan Group, where they received training on managing their earnings, saving, and conducting business. With just a little savings for three months, Ella started a small roadside grocery stand business.
Ella’s desire to start a farming business mushroomed when, again, MOHI trained her on farming. She later applied for a loan, and together with her husband, they invested in the farming business. They rented a small piece of land where they cultivated field corn. From the sales of their first harvest, they bought a motorbike, and the husband started a transport business with it.
From their proceeds, Ella and her husband bought a piece of land where they currently run their farming business. Currently, the family can support their children’s basic needs without any struggle. Ella is also mentoring young mothers in the community through the MOHI programs. Furthermore, she was appointed as a women’s leader at her church, where she also serves in the children's ministry. We are proud of her and her entire family.
