Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Edgar* is a Grade 7 student at our Mathare North Center. Over time, his teachers noticed that he spent much of his time in school crying. He always seemed withdrawn, and his academic performance began to decline. Concerned, his teacher gently asked what was bothering him. That was when Edgar disclosed what was happening at home.
His parents had been frequently fighting and frequently hurling insults at each other. This unrest always left Edgar and his siblings overwhelmed. They knew no peace at home.
We decided to pay the family a visit to better understand the situation. During the first three visits, tension remained high and meaningful conversation seemed impossible. Even while we were there, the mother continued to verbally attack her husband. But we did not give up. On the fourth visit, we facilitated a calm conversation between the two parents. By the time we were leaving, the mother who had been insisting that the husband leave the house was willing to discuss with the husband the way forward.
The next day, Edgar came to school with good news: there was peace at home. We made another follow-up visit and confirmed that the parents had talked through their issues and agreed to work together.
Today, the parents can sit together, talk and make plans as a family. Edgar and his siblings are happier, more stable and grateful to experience calmness and peace at home.
