Head Teacher, Lochoredome
Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Ekai* was born in 2001 in a small village in Lochoredome, located in Turkana County, over 700 kilometers (about 430 miles) from Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. He lost his father at the age of eight, leaving their mother as the sole provider for the family. Life became so unbearable that his mother decided to move to another town, leaving Ekai behind under his uncle’s care. He ended up herding his uncle’s livestock. This reduced his chances of learning to read and write.
An opportunity arose for him to join a local primary school in Grade 4. Even though he started school late, he remained determined to learn and improve his life. Then everything changed when MOHI came to the community. At that time, he was in Grade 6. Through MOHI’s support, he was sponsored to stay in school through Grade 12, something he once thought was impossible.
For the first time in his life, Ekai felt a sense of belonging and purpose. After high school, God opened another door for him. He enrolled at the Turkana Institute of Health and Psychological Studies, where he pursued a course in Child Care and Protection. A MOHI internship program enabled him to pay his college fees. In 2024, he graduated. It was a moment of pride not just for him and MOHI, but for everyone who had supported him along the way.
Today, Ekai works as a social worker at our Lochoredome School, giving back to the very community that once poured so much into him. Now a husband and father to a young boy, the family lovingly adopted, Ekai lives with deep gratitude, purpose, and a passion to help others.
He believes that God used MOHI to bless his life.
