Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Eunice* is a parent and a beneficiary of Missions of Hope International. She is a strong and determined single mother, raising six children on her own in Mathare, an informal urban settlement in Nairobi. Four of her children are currently in school at MOHI’s Kosovo Center and one is in Grade 12 at MOHI’s Joska Girls High School. Her last child is still young and stays at home with her.
Life has never been easy. In 2024, when heavy floods and government demolitions hit the Mathare area, her life changed. Her house, which was built near the riverbank, was marked for demolition. One morning, she woke up to the sound of machines tearing down homes. Her family’s house was completely demolished. In just one day, Eunice and her children lost the little they had managed to build over the years.
Eunice was left heartbroken, confused, and unsure of how to start again. She did not have the money to rebuild her home or buy new household items. Feeding her children became a struggle. She would sometimes sacrifice her meals so her children could eat.
But God made a way through MOHI. Eunice was identified and enrolled in a holistic family empowerment program. Through Community Health Evangelism (CHE) lessons taught by the family social worker and the microfinance officers, Eunice’s life began to change.
She learned about financial literacy and how to start a small business. Later, she received a small start-up loan that helped her start a roadside grocery stall in her neighborhood. With the little money she earns, Eunice can now buy food for the family, pay rent, and take care of some basic needs for her children. She is learning how to manage her profits wisely. She hopes to grow the business in the future and increase her earnings.
The CHE program did more than just teach business. It also helped Eunice grow spiritually. Before joining, Eunice and her children did not go to church. They were often too discouraged or busy trying to survive. But now, Eunice and all her children go to church together every Sunday. Their faith is growing stronger each day.
Eunice's health has also improved. In the past, she was often sick, but with regular home visits from the social worker, she was advised to visit a clinic and get proper medication. She now feels stronger and can focus better on her business and children.
Her children are also thriving. They attend school regularly, are active in Sunday School, and are slowly recovering from the trauma of losing their home. Eunice says they are more disciplined, happier, and hopeful.
Today, Eunice is still on her journey, but she is no longer walking alone. MOHI is doing it with her, and her life is slowly changing. She now has hope and a reason to smile. She dreams of one day moving into a permanent house and giving her children a better life.
