Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Sam* and John* are siblings in Grade 3 and 6, respectively. Both boys live with sickle cell anemia. Their mother supports the family by selling bananas on the roadside, earning just enough to get by.
For a while, Sam and John have been struggling to attend school. They appeared withdrawn, walked with difficulty, showed signs of joint pain, and had pale faces. It became clear that their mother’s limited income could not cover the family’s basic needs, let alone the boys’ daily medications or monthly clinic visits. Most of the family's income was channeled to their monthly prescriptions. Many times, the mother was unable to buy the medication, making the children miss school or attend school uncomfortably due to body pain and walking difficulties. This changed when their teacher and social worker intervened.
John and Sam were referred to MOHI’s Pangani clinic, and with the help of the medical staff, they started receiving medication at no cost. This has enabled the two to attend school regularly, and their academic performance has improved. They are now happy and jovial, just like their peers. Their pain is managed. John joined the school music club and is among the boys representing the school at the National Music Competition.
The boys are now full of life and hope.
