Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Alvin* joined our Korogocho Grogan Center in kindergarten. He comes from a loving family where he lives with his parents and two sisters in Korogocho Grogan area. When he first started school, Alvin struggled with personal hygiene and academics. He would come to school with a dirty face, unkempt hair, a shirt with buttons missing, a torn sweater, and unpolished shoes with no laces. His bag was often empty and when asked he would say that his books got lost on his way to school.
Alvin could hardly read or complete his homework. He would hide his books under the desk and lie that the books had been stolen. He would sometimes pretend to be writing during class but he wouldn’t have written anything at all. After some time, he started leaving his homework book at home. He eventually started coming to school late and when asked why, he would fail to show up the following day. Healthwise, Alvin suffered from persistent ringworms and a runny nose.
Recognizing the need for an intervention, his social worker met with his parents and advised them to take Alvin to the clinic at our Pangani Center where he could receive medical attention. The social worker also consulted with Alvin’s teachers to create a support plan. They started helping him read daily and closely monitored his classwork. He was also assigned small responsibilities, such as collecting homework books and organizing areas of the classroom everyday, to encourage punctuality and attendance.
Thanks to these combined efforts, Alvin has made remarkable progress. His reading has improved, he completes his assignments on time, and no longer hides his books. Writing has become one of his favorite activities. Currently, he has been made the class monitor, making sure everyone’s homework is collected and organized each morning. This has made Alvin come to school every day without fail. His hygiene has also improved significantly - he comes to school in a clean uniform with well-polished shoes and keeps his nose clean.
We are indeed grateful to the Lord for Alvin’s transformation and we look forward to seeing him continue to grow and succeed.
