Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Meet Yusuf*, a 15-year-old boy whose journey is a testament to how hope, guidance, and determination can spark change in a young life. Yusuf lives in the Korogocho slums with both parents and three siblings. Two of his siblings, one in Grade 10 and the other in Grade 6, are also part of our program. The youngest sibling has not yet started school. Their father does casual jobs at a slaughterhouse, while their mother is a housewife. Despite limited resources, the family remains closely knit, with the father frequently attending school meetings.

Initially, Yusuf struggled with school commitment. He was frequently absent, rarely completed classwork or homework, and showed little to no interest in studies. His teachers became concerned as his performance declined, and it was clear that without intervention, Yusuf might fall further behind.

A home visit revealed deeper issues; although Yusuf’s father showed up for school meetings, there was very little accountability at home. No one followed up to know if he had attended lessons or not, no one checked whether he did his homework or not, and there was no effort to support him academically. With this deeper understanding, the school launched a more focused approach, offering Yusuf regular counseling, close mentorship, and intentional support. Gradually, things began to shift. He started showing up to school on time, and he became more engaged in class. His teachers noticed the change and applauded his efforts.

Today, Yusuf is not just showing up physically; he is fully engaged emotionally and psychologically. He has expressed a clear desire to succeed, and the changes he has made reflect a young man who is taking ownership of his life and rewriting his story. Yusuf’s journey is still ongoing, but his transformation is inspiring to his teachers, peers, and family. His story reminds us that with the right support and a willing heart, any student can rise above their past and move forward with purpose.
