Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Annet* is eight years old and in Grade 2 at Missions of Hope Korogocho B. Her early life was marked by instability. Her parents were very young when she was born, and her father decided he didn’t want the responsibility of raising a child, leaving Annet’s mother to care for her alone. Unfortunately, Annet’s mother struggled with alcohol addiction and was unable to provide the care Annet needed, so she sent her to live with her grandmother. Though her grandmother provided her with the basic needs such as food, shelter and clothes, she could not afford to send Annet to school.
As time passed, Annet’s grandmother fell seriously ill and could hardly take care of herself, let alone Annet. It was during a family meeting that it was decided that Annet would move in with her aunt Julia*. Aunt Julia has a son who goes to school at Missions of Hope International and lives in Nairobi. She took on the responsibility of taking care of Annet. The move was hard for Annet as she sometimes felt out of place and unwanted.
With the help of a MOHI social worker, Annet was enrolled into MOHI, and placed in a class suitable for her level, as she had missed a significant amount of schooling. Initially, her teacher noticed she was very reserved and had difficulty concentrating in school. The teacher and social worker provided guidance and counseling and even encouraged her that her life will get better.
They also encouraged Annet to attend church every Sunday, helping her to connect with a supportive community. Through the support, care and encouragement she received, Annet began to open up, becoming more engaged in her studies and participating in social activities.
Annet has now settled into school and has made friends both at school and at home. She feels more at home now as she is surrounded by people who want the best for her. We thank God that MOHI is a safe place for children so they can become who God has called them to be.
