Hope Transforms: A Success Story
June* has lived with her husband and their three children in the Kiwandani community for over 10 years. Like many families in the area, they have faced tough economic times, often relying on casual jobs and, at one point, managing only one meal a day.
During a routine home visit, a MOHI social worker met June and learned about her family’s struggles. That conversation led to her daughter, Nancy*, being placed on the MOHI enrollment waiting list. Later that year, Nancy was successfully enrolled and began kindergarten in 2021.
Two years later, MOHI launched a parent empowerment program in the community. Recognizing her need for change, June stepped out of her comfort zone and joined Tumaini (Hope), a self-help group made up of 11 women. They began table banking, saving weekly and offering each other small loans to meet family needs or start small businesses. June was elected chairlady of the group. In addition to financial training, the women also receive spiritual encouragement and practical life skills during their sessions.
Encouraged by the support of her group and guidance from MOHI social workers, June took a small loan and launched a grocery stall. Though still growing, the business has allowed her to contribute meaningfully to the family’s needs and lighten the financial load on her husband.
The group’s next goal is to join MOHI’s microfinance program, which will open the door to larger loans and business expansion. June has become a role model in her community—a picture of courage, faith, and determination. We thank God for her journey and continue to pray for His blessing over her work and her growing business.
