Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Betty* is a second-grade student at Missions of Hope Kiamaiko-Ngei Center. We first met her in 2023, when her family was facing a significant financial crisis. Both her parents are casual laborers; her mother washes clothes in a nearby estate, while her father works at construction sites whenever jobs are available. Despite their hard work, making ends meet was a daily struggle.
After a home visit and a conversation with the family social worker from MOHI, Betty’s mother was encouraged to join a local growth group, a community-based initiative focused on building savings and promoting financial stability. She took that advice to heart, joined the group, and committed to saving just $1 a week. She also joined a table banking group, contributing another $1 per cycle.
Her consistency paid off. After just four months, she had saved enough to pay off some of her debts and regain a sense of control over her finances. Today, Betty’s mother is able to meet her family’s daily needs without relying on borrowed money. The burden that once weighed so heavily on the family has been lifted.
She remains an active member of the growth group, continuing to save and build towards a better future. What began as a small step of faith has led to real transformation, empowering her family with hope, dignity, and greater stability.
