Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Ella* joined our school in preschool while living with her single mother from the Kariobangi community. From the beginning, she stood out as a disciplined student. Her mother was also a dedicated and loving parent. Even though she struggled financially, she ensured that her daughter had all she needed in school.
Ella lived happily and always excelled in school, but life took a tragic turn when the unexpected happened. Her mother fell ill, and after a long, painful battle with sickness, she passed away during surgery. The loss was devastating, not only emotionally but also financially. The family could not afford to pay the hospital bills, and her mother’s body remained in the mortuary for some time. However, through the support of a MOHI social worker, the family went to court, and their case was heard, allowing them to give her a decent burial.
Losing her mother was a heavy blow. Ella struggled to focus on her studies. Her grades began to drop, and she lost interest in school. The loss took a toll on Ella's physical and mental health and left a spiritual void in her life. She often questioned her faith and struggled to cope with her emotions. She experienced anxiety and depression.
However, with the support of her aunt, teachers and social workers, Ella slowly started to rebuild her life. At school, she was also encouraged to seek solace in prayer and reflection. She stayed focused on her studies, and her hard work paid off. Her grades improved, and she even developed a passion for learning, especially in writing and public speaking. These changes, along with therapy, helped her regain balance and confidence.
Today, at 11 years old, Ella is thriving in Grade 5. Her story continues to encourage others to maintain a positive outlook during times of tribulations and exercise perseverance. She has learnt to navigate challenges and prioritize her well-being.
