Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Tiffany* is a 12-year-old Grade 1 student at Missions of Hope Kargi Center. She comes from a family of five. Before joining school, she often stayed at home, looking after her siblings while her mother worked to provide for the family. Her father worked as a casual security guard in Kargi town. His beliefs were deeply rooted in local traditions. He thought sending girls to school would delay the dowry (camels and goats) he would receive through marriage. He often said educated girls were harder to marry off, as most men who could afford a dowry preferred uneducated wives. Because of these beliefs, he never cared about his daughter’s education.

Two years ago, a MOHI social worker identified Tiffany from a group of young Sunday school children during a church service. Her curiosity and determination stood out, prompting the social worker to learn more about her situation, and she was later enrolled in the MOHI program. At the time, her father owned a few goats that supported the family. Still, his growing addiction to alcohol and miraa (a local stimulant) soon caused him to abandon his responsibilities. Eventually, he left home altogether. Apart from Tiffany, who attended Sunday School inconsistently, the family did not belong to any religion.

Tifanny’s mother continued to encourage her daughter to go to school. At school, she found a safe place to learn, grow and dream beyond her circumstances. Tiffany later moved in with her aunt, who is Muslim. The aunt started influencing her towards Islamic practices. She started missing church services, and an alarm was raised. The social worker followed up, guiding her back and encouraging her to remain active in church. Tiffany stopped going to her aunt’s home and went back to her mother’s place.

Through Tifanny’s connection to the school and church, her mother also started attending church services and joined the weekly women’s fellowship for Bible study and encouragement. Today, we are witnessing a complete transformation in the family. Tiffany is thriving, attending school consistently, and actively participating in church activities. She now has hope for a brighter future.

  • We celebrated the completion and official launch of our new classroom block. The block will provide more space and an improved learning environment for our students.
  • We were blessed with a new ambulance, which will greatly enhance emergency response and healthcare support in our community.
  • Our 32 Grade 6 and 72 Grade 9 students successfully completed their national tests this term. We pray that they will pass with good grades.
  • A ministry partner visited our center, gracing the launch of a new classroom block and the ambulance. We thank God for their support and partnership with MOHI. The family spent time with their sponsored children, which meant a lot to those students.

  • Pray for our non-local MOHI staff in Kargi that they may find grace, strength, and favor as they continue serving the community with dedication.
  • Pray for a smooth transition of junior secondary students as they advance to senior school. This will be the first senior high school class since the introduction of the new education curriculum in Kenya.
