Greetings from Gitathuru!

Greetings from Gitathuru Center! We give thanks to God for His faithfulness in bringing us to the end of Term 3. Through our partnership, we have done numerous things and we want to share some highlights.

Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Alex* is a Grade 1 student at Missions of Hope Gitathuru Center. He joined our preschool in 2023. He lives with his mother, and they have faced many challenges. His mother once owned a small clothing business that comfortably sustained her family’s needs. Unfortunately, the flash floods that swept through the Mathare community last year destroyed her business, turning all her hard work and dreams into nothing but mud and loss. Amid that crisis, her husband abandoned the family, leaving her to raise their son alone. With no steady income, she relied on support from well-wishers and relatives. Eventually, she decided to return to her rural home to stay with her parents.

Shortly after settling there, she discovered she was pregnant again. Despite emotional and financial pressures, she persevered. Alex had been pulled out of the MOHI program due to the relocation. Through regular follow-up calls from our social worker, his mother shared how much Alex missed school, his teachers, and MOHI activities, especially the gifts and meals that motivated him to keep learning. Inspired by his longing, she decided to return to the city.

By the time she came back, she had already delivered a set of twins: a boy and a girl. Her responsibilities now include caring for two other children. Her son was readmitted to school and the joy on their faces was indescribable; the lost glory was truly restored.

One day, MOHI ministry partners offered to do home improvements for MOHI parents, and she was selected. She received a double-decker bed, utensils, a food basket, and other essentials, which significantly improved her newly set-up home.

Today, Alex’s mother is one of the most committed and joyful parents in our program. She has started a small roadside grocery stand, steadily rebuilding her family’s life. Her story is a powerful reminder that with faith, perseverance, and hope, restoration is possible.

Keep praying for her that God may bless her family abundantly.

  • We thank God for a powerful Synergy Sunday service. This service brings together our community, staff, and students to worship and strengthen our teamwork. We had a great time together.
  • In a colorful ceremony, we celebrated 129 kindergarten students who will be joining Grade 1 in January 2026. Their confidence and presentations clearly showed they’re well-prepared for this next step!
  • We thank God for a successful prayer day service that we held for our Grade 6 and 9 students before they took their national tests. Their parents, friends and our staff were in attendance.

  • We organized a community outreach where we reached out to 41 households. Six people gave their lives to Christ.
  • Working alongside our social workers, we conducted additional home visits and evangelism efforts, reaching 72 homes and praying with families. During these visits, two individuals came to faith.
  • We had a baptism event where 14 students who had attended Angaza Discovery Camp  (MOHI’s two-week discipleship camp at the Kenyan coast for all sixth graders) and completed the new believers class, along with four church members, got baptized.
  • Our Synergy Sunday service (a service that brings together students, staff and community members for worship, fellowship, and celebration of God’s goodness) brought together 146 people.

  • We were delighted to host a team from Christ’s Church of the Valley (Peoria, AZ) this term. During their visit, they interacted with students in their classrooms and learned about the history of our center. The visiting team also conducted training sessions for our school leaders and several teachers, focusing on leadership development and self-defense skills. It was a valuable and empowering experience that equipped our staff with practical tools for both personal and professional use.

  • Pray that the candidates who sat for their national tests will pass with good grades.
  • Pray for the community we serve that God will restore good health, and they will be economically stable to support their children.
  • Pray for the staff that God will give them strength to continue transforming the lives of the students and their families.
