Hope Transforms: A Success Story
Andrew* is a Grade 6 student at Missions of Hope Coram Deo Center. He joined in 2020 after being rescued from the streets and was enrolled as a Grade 2 student. The now 12-year-old boy is the second of four children. His early life was marked by hardship and loss. Andrew’s father passed away when he was still young, and not long after, his mother fell into alcoholism and stopped caring for her children. This left the children in a difficult situation.
When MOHI stepped in, their story changed. Andrew’s elder sibling is currently in Grade 10 at Missions of Hope Turi High School. The younger sibling stays with their grandmother. Andrew found himself under the care of his aunt, who is unwell and unable to work. The family’s main provider, therefore, is their uncle, who takes on casual jobs.
Having spent a significant part of his childhood on the streets, Andrew initially found it hard to adjust to school life. He often portrayed aggressive behavior, always fighting and stealing from other students. He also used abusive language.
However, through the dedicated support of the social worker, class teacher, and school pastor, Andrew began to change. They spent time counseling him, showing him love, patience, and guidance. When Andrew attended the Angaza Discovery Camp (a discipleship camp at the Kenyan coast for all sixth graders) this year, his life changed. He experienced a deep transformation and made the decision to give his life to Jesus Christ.
Since then, Andrew’s behavior and attitude have greatly improved. He now attends church every Sunday and actively participates in school activities. He has become more respectful, disciplined, and caring toward others. In class, he regularly assists his fellow students, which is a clear sign of servanthood.
Andrew’s story is a beautiful testimony of God’s grace and the power of love, care, and guidance. From a troubled boy living on the streets to a responsible, God-fearing young student, Andrew is a true example of transformation through faith and mentorship.
