On Saturday, February 17, a devastating fire broke out in the Bondeni community. Over 170 families were affected and the metal structure at our Bondeni school was destroyed. This building contained 18 classrooms which served 694 students. Desks, textbooks, and other school supplies were also lost in the fire. The total damage is estimated at $300,000. We thank God no one was injured and that our permanent building, which is under construction, was not damaged.
Our greatest concern is that the students return to school as quickly as possible. Starting Wednesday, February 21, Bondeni’s eighth grade students will report to Pangani and the second and third grade students will report to makeshift classrooms at Kosovo. The remaining displaced students will occupy makeshift classrooms in Bondeni. Although this is not a sustainable solution, we feel it’s the best short-term plan because it provides minimal delays in our students' education and feeding programs.
We have a great and urgent need to rebuild classrooms and create a conducive learning environment for our students. Should you feel prompted to give, funds will immediately go toward:
- Constructing classrooms
- Building desks
- Purchasing textbooks and other school supplies
Funds can be given at cmfi.org/BondeniFire
We greatly appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and gifts towards this great need. Whether you are near or far, thank you for being a part of the Bondeni community.
