A New Beginning

Everlyn knew that sending her children to Nairobi would change their lives, but she never expected it to be such a profound blessing. In the face of hardship, what felt like a difficult choice became the turning point for their future.

Everlyn and her husband lived in a rural village in western Kenya, raising their four children. However, home was not always a safe place. Over time, challenges in Everlyn's marriage grew more complex, and the weight of it all became overwhelming. Everlyn’s sister, who lived in Mathare—one of Nairobi’s informal settlements—often urged Everlyn to consider relocating. She told Everlyn about Missions of Hope International (MOHI), where her children could find stability, education, and care.

One evening, an argument at home turned dangerous. In an attempt to protect herself, Everlyn sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized for five days. As she recovered, she decided to send her children to live with her sister in Mathare, where they could be safe.

Everlyn’s sister quickly contacted MOHI’s Bondeni Center, seeking help for her nieces and nephews. Soon, all four children were enrolled in school, receiving a quality Christian education, two nutritious meals daily, counseling, and a caring community. MOHI social workers walked alongside them, helping them process their experiences and offered support when they needed it most.

Meanwhile, Everlyn began the challenging process of rebuilding her life. She pursued legal avenues for justice and navigated the difficulties of separation while ensuring her children’s well-being. Knowing they were in a safe and loving environment at MOHI gave her the peace of mind she desperately needed.

For two years, Everlyn worked hard to recover—physically, emotionally, and financially. During this time, something incredible happened. Each of her children received sponsors who provided food baskets and other essential supplies. More than material help, the sponsorships became a source of hope and encouragement. Everlyn and her children knew they were not alone—there were people across the world who cared for them, prayed for them, and invested in their future.

Determined to provide for her family, Everlyn started a small business selling snacks to travelers on long-distance buses. This venture restored her confidence and empowered her to contribute to her children’s needs and rebuild her life with dignity.

Today, life looks very different. Everlyn is no longer the woman who once walked through MOHI’s doors. Her two older children have completed their education—one is now a mechanic, and the other is training to become an electrician. Her two younger children remain in school at MOHI, thriving in a nurturing environment.

Looking back, Everlyn is overwhelmed with gratitude. She often recalls visits from MOHI social workers, bringing food baskets provided by child sponsors to ensure her children were well-fed, even during school breaks. The support they received not only sustained them but empowered them to build a better future.

"God has a plan for His people," she says. "I'm so grateful that MOHI came when I needed them most. This is beyond what I ever dreamed my life would become."
