She listens, visits homes, helps families identify their needs, and offers emotional and psychosocial support. Her work is deeply personal. Years ago, Florence and her own family experienced seasons of illness, uncertainty, and instability. Along the way, the perseverance of her mother, the encouragement of others, and the holistic support Florence received through MOHI helped new opportunities begin to take shape. “I never saw anything good coming out of me in my future. All the odds were against me.* | | --- | #### **A Family Persevering Through Uncertainty** Florence grew up in the city with her mother and brother. Her mother worked hard to care for the family, taking on casual jobs such as washing clothes and dishes for neighbors. Her mother’s ongoing health challenges also made daily life unpredictable. Florence remembers the fear she felt whenever her mother needed emergency medical care. “An ambulance would come for her, and we would wonder whether or even when she would come back and what would happen if she never came back.” Around that time, Florence’s mother learned about MOHI through a friend. After meeting with a MOHI social worker, Florence and her brother were enrolled at a MOHI school. ![Florence at School](https://blog.mohiafrica.org/hs-fs/hubfs/Florence%20at%20School.jpeg?width=900&height=549&name=Florence%20at%20School.jpeg) #### **A Place to Learn, Grow, and Belong** At school, Florence found space to concentrate on her education and enjoy being a student. Meals and school supplies also eased some of the pressures her family was carrying. Over time, Florence and her family experienced several parts of MOHI’s holistic ministry working together. Social workers continued visiting the family and offering encouragement. Florence received an education and nutritious meals, while her family was also connected to medical and spiritual support. Her relationship with her sponsor also became an important source of encouragement. “I felt really loved as I enjoyed exchanging letters with my sponsor. They would send me gifts, which were very encouraging,” she says. | *"* *I felt really loved as I enjoyed exchanging letters with my sponsor.* | | --- | Those letters were more than an exchange of words. For Florence, they were a reminder that someone was thinking about her and encouraging her as she continued growing. Her faith was growing, too. “MOHI changed my life and renewed my hope,” she says. “I desired to know God better, and that happened at MOHI.” | *"* *MOHI changed my life and renewed my hope. I desired to know God better, and that happened at MOHI.* | | --- | Through staff, sponsors, family, and the wider MOHI community, Florence experienced people walking alongside her while God continued shaping her life and faith. #### **Growth for the Whole Family** As Florence continued her education, her mother was also moving forward. She became involved in the school’s Parent-Teacher Association and later secured a MOHI janitorial position. As a staff member, she had access to regular medical care through MOHI’s clinic. Over time, her health improved. Florence’s story reflects the way MOHI’s holistic ministry seeks to walk alongside not only students but also their families. It also reflects the determination of a mother who continued working, caring for her children, participating in their school community, and pursuing opportunities for her family despite difficult circumstances. #### **Discovering a Calling to Walk Alongside Others** After graduating from high school, Florence returned to MOHI as a volunteer. “I would go there and help in the kitchen to cut veggies, clean utensils, and also help the social workers in their work,” she says. As she served, Florence began to recognize an interest in social work. She chose to pursue the field at university, building the knowledge and skills she would later use professionally. The care she once experienced has helped shape the way she now chooses to care for others. “MOHI’s social workers did this for me when I really needed that. I love that I have the baton now and get to do it for others too.* | | --- | Her story has come full circle, not because every challenge disappeared at once, but because years of perseverance, opportunity, relationships, faith, and support helped prepare Florence for the work she feels called to do. #### **From Fear to Grounded Hope** For many years, the sound of an ambulance brought Florence back to moments of uncertainty about her mother’s health. Today, those memories remain part of her story, but they no longer carry the same fear. “Days are gone when my mother would be admitted to the hospital two or three times a year,” she explains. “She has not been admitted to any hospital in the recent past, and the sound of ambulances no longer threatens me.” Her brother has also completed high school and is looking ahead to university. Florence continues to see God’s faithfulness in the journey her family has walked. “Through MOHI, my life and that of my family have been transformed,” she says. And the lesson she carries into her work today is one she can now share with the families she serves: “I have learnt that coming from a vulnerable background does not condemn one to being vulnerable.” | *"* *I have learnt that coming from a vulnerable background does not condemn one to being vulnerable.* | | --- | Florence’s journey is a reminder that meaningful change often grows over time, through a family’s perseverance, a student’s determination, faithful relationships, practical support, and people willing to walk alongside one another.
